The Oil Sands

Today, it is well known that the oil sands of northeastern Alberta are an important energy resource. However, this was not always the case. Since they were first brought to the attention of fur traders in the late 1700s, it was speculated that the oil sands might prove useful, and even profitable. The oil sands occupied the thoughts and imaginations of entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers and politicians, but their exact nature, origin and extent were a mystery and a source of debate.

What exactly were they? Where had they come from? How much was out there?

Years of intensive study and research have answered many of these questions, but there is one question that is still a source of debate. What is the proper name for the sands? Many are satisfied that “oil sands” is correct, but despite efforts to standardize terminology, “tar sands” and “bituminous sands” are still commonly used.

Alberta’s oil sands are a naturally occurring mixture of sand, silt, clay, minerals, water and a very viscous type of oil.
