Mining Operations in 1948

When plans for the new separation plant at Bitumount were being drawn up in 1945, Karl Clark went to inspect the proposed mine site. The area planned for the quarry was set back some distance from the riverbank. The camp buildings were to be situated to overlook the river. When Clark undertook some exploratory augering on the site, he discovered that the best location for mining the oil sands was actually where the camp was proposed to be. On his recommendation, the quarry operation took the spot reserved for the camp, where only 8 ft. (2.4 m), rather than the 60 ft. (18 m) of overburden at the original location, would need to be removed.

In 1948, W. E. Adkins noted that

The open pit mine, or quarry from which the Oil Sand is being removed has been opened South of the plant in a strip about 200 feet wide paralleling the river. The actual mine face is open to the river to facilitate drainage. Mining will be carried out by working a 10 to 12 foot face about 900 feet in length, the face being worked back from the river for a distance of 200 feet on each successive lift. At the present time an area approximately 500 feet long by 200 feet wide has been stripped while an additional area 400 feet long by 200 feet wide has been partially stripped.
It is considered that at least 30 feet of Oil Sand can be removed from the present mine without developing serious grades on the access roads. This represents approximately 200,000 cubic yards which should keep the present plant operating at capacity for about 20 months. At the end of that time a decision will have to be made as to whether to extend the mine in which case hauls will be longer or quite steep and drainage problems will develop at certain seasons of the year.
Mining equipment consists at present of a ¾ yard Combination Shovel and Dragline, a large tractor equipped with a 12 foot hydraulic bulldozer and 3-4 yard dump truck. [...] Experience to date indicates that this equipment can handle the mining satisfactorily. Under normal conditions sufficient sand for 24 hours operation can be mined in one eight hour shift, using two dump trucks. [...] In all upwards of 35,000 cubic yards of overburden and lean sand were removed from the mine prior to the commencement of operations.

Considerable work was needed to provide safe driving conditions for the trucks hauling 4 to 5 tons of oil sand per load. The topsoil in its original condition was unstable, so it was stripped down to the oil sand, and a gravel roadway built up between the quarry and the plant.

As it turned out, none of the challenges posed by ongoing, high volume or winter mining had to be dealt with, as Bitumount did not stay in operation for very long.
