    Early indigenous people transform coal found in seams in foothills and mountain regions into effigies.

    Most of the effigies depict bison, usually cows, with tongues out, indicating either running or being in labour. The specimens have all suffered damage from ploughing but are still remarkable and accurate anatomical reproductions of bison.

    The entrance to Galt Drift Mine No. 1 in 1885 near present-day Lethbridge; Sir Alexander Galt establishes the mine to exploit the region’s abundant coal deposits. Galt also establishes the North Western Coal and Navigation Company in the same year to supply coal to the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Global Coal Formation

As the most plentiful of all the fossil fuel energy resources, coal is found in almost every part of the world. There are more than 2,000 major global coal deposits with recoverable reserves in approximately seventy countries.

The largest proven coal reserves are in present-day United States, Russia and China. According to a 2013 review of global energy reserves, each of these three land masses still contains more than 100,000 million tonnes (110,231 million tons), even after years of extensive mining. The Australian and Indian land masses also contain an abundance of coal: Australia has over 76,000 million tonnes (83,776 million tons) while India has more than 60,000 million (66,139 million tons). The Canadian land mass ranks eleventh in the world with nearly 7,000 million tonnes (7,716 million tons) of coal, 70% of which lies in what is now Alberta.

These vast supplies of coal that lie sleeping in the Earth formed millions of years ago and over several geological

time periods. A number of coal deposits are as old as 360 million years in some parts of the world and began forming even before the time of the dinosaurs. Geologists know coal is found in areas that were once covered by lush jungles and swamps of plant life that had taken over much of the landscape, consuming the Sun’s energy and the air’s carbon.

As dense masses of plants died, they fell into the swamps, became partially buried in mud or oxygen-poor water, and accumulated.

In coastal regions, masses of plants were also deposited on the surface of inland basins during floods when sea and ocean levels fluctuated with glacier melt/freeze patterns in the Southern Hemisphere. Lacking oxygen, the buried plants only partially decayed, turning into a spongy mass of carbon-rich plant material called peat. This spongy mass was slow-cooked by the tremendous pressure and heat of geological forces, eventually hardening into coal beneath the Earth’s surface.
