    Early indigenous people transform coal found in seams in foothills and mountain regions into effigies.

    Most of the effigies depict bison, usually cows, with tongues out, indicating either running or being in labour. The specimens have all suffered damage from ploughing but are still remarkable and accurate anatomical reproductions of bison.

    The entrance to Galt Drift Mine No. 1 in 1885 near present-day Lethbridge; Sir Alexander Galt establishes the mine to exploit the region’s abundant coal deposits. Galt also establishes the North Western Coal and Navigation Company in the same year to supply coal to the Canadian Pacific Railway.

    Mountain Park Station, Mountain Park, Alberta, ca. 1920-1923; small-scale mining had begun in the Coal Branch about 1909, but after 1910 the arrival of the railway opened up the region to large-scale mining. Mountain Park appears to have been the first major community to grow, reaching a population of about 330 by the early 1920s.

From Pit Ponies to Locomotives

Humans were not the only living creatures to labour underground in the quest for coal. Once the coal was disengaged from the Earth, it still had to be hauled out to the surface. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was often ponies or mules, and sometimes even horses, that provided the muscle to remove the mined coal.

One mine might have as many as eighty of these working ponies. Generally short, stocky and incredibly strong, some pit ponies were capable of pulling five fully-loaded coal cars. Many miners remembered the ponies with which they worked quite fondly, bragging about how smart they were or how strong they were or how heroic they were. One former miner recalled, “You always had the same horse and the thing was you got to know him and he got to know you.”

While treatment of these hooved labourers varied from mine to mine, in general, they were adequately cared for since operators understood that their efficiency was directly related to their health. Further incentive was provided in the cost and time involved in purchasing and training a replacement for an injured or sick pony. Many miners lamented that management was more concerned with the ponies than with the men since “you could replace a man anytime them days.” Some mines had underground stables where the horses were housed for most of the year, coming up to pasture only when work slowed down such as during the summers. A stableman would be in charge of the underground stalls and of supplying the animals with the necessary feed and water. Other mines simply brought the ponies up and down in shifts much like the miners themselves.

Despite such efforts, the life expectancy of pit ponies was low, as the work was as tough on them as it was on humans. Hooves were easily damaged from working in the mine over tracks, ties and rough coal. Any sign of lameness rendered the horse unfit for work.

Pit ponies continued to haul coal, tools and equipment in Alberta mines into the 1950s before they were completely replaced by mechanized systems. In the race to maximize production, dinky locomotives and mine trollies won out over pit ponies, as they could haul out

more coal faster than the animals. A compressed air locomotive, the dinky could be charged on the surface at a compressor house or, at some mines, at an underground air filling station. One of the benefits of an air-powered engine is a reduced likelihood of causing a fire or explosion by emitting sparks. This made them very popular in particularly gassy mines such as those at Crowsnest Pass. The dinky locomotive was not without its challenges, however, and a miscalculation of the necessary air supply could stop the engine in its tracks.
