    Herron Acquires Land and Drilling Rights

    William Stewart Herron, shown here ca. 1930, noticed gas seepages along the Sheep River and acquired land and drilling rights for the area. He partnered with Archibald W. Life in Turner Valley

The development of the petroleum industry after 1914 fundamentally reshaped patterns of settlement and community development in the Turner Valley area. The region became a centre of bustling activity, as thousands of workers and their families arrived in search of economic opportunity. The population of existing communities swelled, while new settlements and work camps emerged with the spread of oil and gas exploration and drilling throughout the valley. Patterns of growth and decline in these communities reflected the ebb and flow of the petroleum industry as a whole, which surged in response to new discoveries and shrunk (at times even disappeared) in response to hard economic times.

The industry that so decisively influenced the nature of community growth and decline also shaped the patterns of everyday life in the Turner Valley region. Social development, culture, work and leisure all reflected the pervasive

influence of the oil and gas industry. Attracted by the prospect of high wages, workers had to consider how best to protect their interests in a dangerous industry prone to boom and bust cycles that could trade prosperity for unemployment at short notice. Women arrived in the Turner Valley area primarily as the wives and daughters of oilfield workers and found creative and important ways to contribute to the family economy— a distinct challenge in a region where women enjoyed few wage-earning prospects. Both men and women participated in leisure activities that provided a release from the pressures of work but also served the larger goals of promoting community and challenging the negative public perception that the region was home to nothing more than rough, vulgar boomtowns. Taken together, these topics offer a fascinating window into how petroleum development gave rise to a unique and dynamic society in the Turner Valley area.
