    Early indigenous people transform coal found in seams in foothills and mountain regions into effigies.

    Most of the effigies depict bison, usually cows, with tongues out, indicating either running or being in labour. The specimens have all suffered damage from ploughing but are still remarkable and accurate anatomical reproductions of bison.

    The entrance to Galt Drift Mine No. 1 in 1885 near present-day Lethbridge; Sir Alexander Galt establishes the mine to exploit the region’s abundant coal deposits. Galt also establishes the North Western Coal and Navigation Company in the same year to supply coal to the Canadian Pacific Railway.

    Mountain Park Station, Mountain Park, Alberta, ca. 1920-1923; small-scale mining had begun in the Coal Branch about 1909, but after 1910 the arrival of the railway opened up the region to large-scale mining. Mountain Park appears to have been the first major community to grow, reaching a population of about 330 by the early 1920s.

    The Atlas Mine in Drumheller stops production in 1979 and officially closes in 1984. The large structure is the last wooden tipple standing in Canada. The mine is a Provincial Historic Resource, a National Historic Site of Canada and one of the region’s star attractions.

Children in Early Alberta Mining Culture

Alberta’s coal companies employed many young boys during the early years of the industry. Their first jobs might be as breaker boys to break the coal into uniformly-sized pieces. Boys might also work on the picking table, or screen, to remove rock or anything else from the coal that had been brought up to the surface. Backbreaking, dusty and boring, this work was nearly as difficult as going underground. Working as “trappers,” which required them to open and shut ventilation—or “trap”—doors, was another possibility for young boys. For many, working as “trappers” was the prelude to starting in the mines themselves, where they experienced nightmarish conditions such as sitting in

complete darkness in a dusty mine tunnel alone and for long hours. One old timer remembered going

into the mines when [he] was thirteen years old….That was back when there wasn’t no such thing as continuous mining machine or a motor to pull coal with or anything like that. That was back when they used to use ponies in the mines. And there weren’t any coal-cutting machines to cut coal with. You had to drill it with a breast auger…Then you’d put your powder in the holes, shoot the coal down and load it, and pull it out with ponies. In them days, if you didn’t grow muscles on muscles, you’d die in the mines.

Under the legislation of the North-West Territories, labour laws restricted all girls, women and boys younger than twelve from working in the mines. In 1906, the Government of Alberta enacted The Coal Mines Act, which prohibited boys of between twelve and sixteen years of age from working in any coal mining activity unless they were able to read, write and do arithmetic as far as and including division. Furthermore, boys younger than fourteen were prohibited from operating machinery in the mines. Yet an accident that occurred on February 8, 1920, at West Canadian Collieries coal mine in Bellevue, Alberta, suggests this law was not strictly enforced. Mike Peola was working underground as a brakeman on a dinky locomotive, a locomotive powered by compressed air used in place of pit ponies to haul materials in and out of a mine. The 1910 annual

report by the Department of Public Works states that he was “killed by the motor” of the dinky locomotive. Mike Peola was thirteen at the time of his accidental death and should not have been working on the locomotive. He had started working at the surface of the mine when he was eleven years old. In connection with this incident, the newly appointed Provincial Inspector of Mines for Alberta, John T. Stirling, found it necessary to initiate proceedings against the West Canadian Collieries for two contraventions of The Coal Mines Act: one for employing Peola underground while he was under sixteen years of age, and the other for employing the same person above ground during 1908 while he was under thirteen years of age. The company pleaded guilty in both cases and was fined a mere twenty dollars and costs.
