Origins

Given the enormous machines that currently operate in Alberta’s oil sands, it is perhaps appropriate that the contemporary landscape of the region was shaped by an event of truly epic proportions.

Unlocking the Potential

When the federal government first turned its focus on the Athabasca Oil Sands during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, almost nothing was known about the distant resource.

Mega-Projects

During the late 1940s and the 1950s, much was learned about Alberta’s oil sands. Drilling and other geological work defined the major deposits, and industrial engineers and chemists improved processes for extracting the bitumen and upgrading it into consumer oil products.

Underground Developments

For nearly a century, the focus of oil sands development was on surface operations exploiting bitumen in the Athabasca region.
